 How effective is Film and TV regulation in the Netflix era?



The Film and and TV regulation is starting to have a bit of impact on the Netflix era as “major players such as BT Vision and Netflix are using the ratings.”  Netflix are starting to use and apply the certificates created by the BBFC, this shows a act of cooperation however you could argue are they that effective? Moreover, if Netflix produced content which the BBFC do not agree should be classified because it is “distasteful” Netflix has the right to still post the media.  

So this shows us how un-effective TV and film regulation is because even thought they may agree with some ideas Netflix haven't signed a contract with the BBFC  which forces them to follow the so the BBFC classification BBFC now don't have the authority to control what is exposed to the British Public it challenges all the regulation they do for the British public because they can find whatever media is banned or not available to the, because of there age on Netflix.

How does narrative theory apply to the trailer analysed? The trailer I will be analysing  is BEDEVILED by Terror House. The theme for this Trailer I believe is possession because of the way in which the girl is acting in the trailer. Todorov's theory was the idea of Equilibrium, Disequilibrium and resolution. In terror house's trailer they use disequilibrium for the montage scenes which a typical for horror trailers to include this allows the audience to get the action part of the film which will interest them. The BBFC and PEGI are the two organisations who certificate and rate media products. The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) was set up in 1912 to protect the public from media material that may present harm risk. Originally the BBFC only classified cinema films until the Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984 when it started regulating videos/DVDs. In 1984 the BBFC began to regulate video games as well. From 2003 the responsibility of regulating video games was passed from the BBFC to PEGI (Pan European Game Information). Representation  Laura Mulvey’s theory is that because the most frequent cinema goers are male “The Male Gaze” has now become a norm which can now by certain people (Feminist) be seen as immoral. The theory is that women’s bodies are displayed on screen in films which the male viewer find pleasure from. However even though this gains pleasure from the male viewer it also forces the rest of the audience to see this male gaze through a heterosexual male view. Our trailer included this theory in the shot when one of the protagonists is running in the field, the camera had a full shot which had a complete shot of the female protagonist.
